Bahrainis are back in Pearl Square since yesterday Feb. 19, 2011, a symbol of their defiance to dictatorship, but not so easily. They had to pay a heavy price in the loss of their loved ones. The mercenary army of the king shot at them randomly with live ammunition to kill. It did kill some of them but it could not kill their spirit of defiance.
Mercenary Army of the King Shrouded Bahrain in Innocent Blood
As Egyptians were celebrating their success in wrenching democracy from the jamming jaws of a dictator in Tahrir Square, Cairo, on April 18, 2011, Bahrainis, their brothers in faith and culture, for the same reasons were being shrouded in their own innocent blood.
Egyptian army sided with the nation and did not spill innocent blood. Rather, they speeded and steadied the transition that is maturing day by day on a faster pace. As the Army was conscripted from the nation it did not shoot at the people.
Parallel Between Egypt and Bahrain is Diabolically Gloomy
However, the parallel in Bahrain is diabolically gloomy and tragically depressing for any sensitive person. Bahrainian army consisting of mercenaries, having sympathy only for its pay master i.e. the king, shot at Bahrainis with live ammunition and killed them in cold blood.
On April 18, 2011, in the evening, when people in thousands were returning after burying their loved ones killed by the police in the early dawn operation yesterday April 17, 2011, they were directly shot at near Bahrain's main hospital. Even the injured were not allowed to be shifted to the hospital. Sniper firing prevented the medical staff of the hospital to reach the injured.
Dictatorship in Bahrain is on the verge of collapse as brute force used in the early hours of Thursday April 17, 2011 to vacate the Pearl Square from the protesting people has resulted in many deaths and injuries. About 60 people are missing after the attack. According to unconfirmed reports about 24 people have been killed so far. The innocent blood cannot go unnoticed. Worldwide condemnation is pouring in.
Demands of the Opposition are Simple and Legitimate
The demands of opposition are not far different from what people had demanded in Tunisia and Egypt. The only difference in Bahrain is that opposition’s demands have no overriding economic dimension to them. Bahrainis have come out to the streets for genuine democracy with more political rights, end of discrimination and equal share in country’s wealth. Shias in Bahrain are about 70 percent of the population but are not welcome to join any of the security agencies and they are not allowed to join the army as well.
Sunni monarchy is extremely biased and partial towards Shia majority in the country which has remained patient for decades mainly in recognition to the brute, inhuman and extreme tactics on part of the ruling elites to neutralize any opposition to the King.
Talking to Al-Jazeera, opposition MP Mr. Khalid Ali Marzooq, on April 18, 2011, called it a massacre and demanded of the UN Secretary General, Mr. Ban Ki-moon and all other international bodies to immediately send in the army to protect Bahrainians from the ravages of the King’s army.
Mr. Nabil Rajab of Bahrain Center of Human Rights talking to Al-Jazeera International also condemned the unprovoked military attack on unarmed civilians and called upon the civilized world to come to the rescue of Bahrainians to protect their lives and civil rights.
No Sunni Shia Split
Sunni Monarch is demonizing the Shia majority saying that if strict actions were not taken the country would plunge into sectarian strife. Whereas, leaders of Al-Wefaq, Bahrain’s main opposition party and pro-democracy religious leadership have stressed that there is no Shia-Sunni divide in Bahrain and that civil rights are every Bahraini’s birth right that cannot be taken away from him/her on the basis of religion.
