Where's the threat to Saudi Arabia? Who has attacked Saudi Arabia? Instead, hasn't Saudi Arabia attacked its neighbour?
An ordinary man on the streets of Pakistan asks when reminded of the statement of Mr. Khawaja Asif, Defense Minister of Pakistan in Parliament on Monday.
The minister informed the joint session of Parliament held to discuss whether or not to join Saudi-led coalition against Yemen rebels that Saudi Arabia has asked Pakistan to contribute aircraft, ships and ground troops to its coalition fighting rebels in Yemen.
Last week the defense minister along with Mr. Sartaz Aziz, Prime Minister's advisor on Foreign Affaris was in Riyadh to discuss the extent of Pakistan's involvement in Yemen war .
At home government of Nawaz Sharief is facing tough opposition on the question of sending Pakistan army on mercenary mission as neither Pakistani nor Saudi territorial integrity is under threat.
It is very tough deal for Mr. Nawaz Sharief as well. Saudis are his personal benefactors. They got him released from Parveez Musharraf, when the later had toppled his government on Oct 12, 1999 and put him behind bar.
Being the second Prime Minister after Mr. Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto who was hanged on April 4, 1979 on flimsy grounds through a judicial process, which later even one of the supreme court panel judges accepted as judicial murder, Mr. Sharief's fate hanged in the balance.
Saudis were able to coax Gen. Musharraf and take Mr. Sharief out who remained their guest of honour for almost eight years.
Most people on the streets of Pakistan believe that Mr. Sharief is sending Pakistan army on a mercenary mission obligingly. Mecca and Medina, the most highly respected worshipping places in Islam are not under any threat as the Saudis vocally claim.
Houthis in Yemen are fighting with themselves and their rancor is against their own rulers who have since 1962 acted against their country's interests and remained stooges to Saudi Arab and the US.
The issues was political as Houthis have always remained peaceful in the last two decades. Last dictator of Yemen, Ali Abdullah Salah was a Houthi but ruled Yemen with iron hands in cahoots with Saudis.
Houthis are extremely disillusioned with their dictators at home as well as the House of Saud at their northern border. Yemen is one of the poorest countries in the Arab world. Its per capita income is $1,418 and with adult illiteracy rate of 45%, it ranks among the poorest countries on earth. It has 3 billion barrels of oil to support its economy but no sincere rulers.
Most scholars in the land of Islam think that Saudi Arab's beating up of war drums in the region and sudden aerial strikes as well as aggressive diplomatic postures rallying all Arab nations together in fact is rugged Saudi attempt at forestalling Iran and five +1 agreement on nuclear issue.
Initial agreement which was reached between Iran and five+1 nations on April 2 has left in its wake two most unhappy nations: Saudi Arab and Israel. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahuhas already called upon President Obama to kill the deal.
People wonder Saudi war machine bolstered up with arm sale worth billions of dollars is worth what if it cannot undertake effective aerial raids against some rag tag 'rebels' on its southern border.
Saudi Arab in the Last Arab League meeting prompted and got established the formation of an Arab army comprising all Arab nations including Egypt and has asked Pakistan to contribute to that force as well.
A substantial component of Saudi army is already in Bahrain crushing a peaceful mass movement asking for greater political, legal and human rights. Bahraini King, a cousin of Saudi King is not in a mood to accommodate any such demand.
Incidentally, quite weird though, the Saudi King is bombing Yemen to restore democracy there which the Houthis consider as worse form of dictatorship as deposed president, Mr. Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadidid not keep Yemeni interests in the fore while serving his masters abroad in Riyadh and the US.
Saudi aggression cannot restore their influence in Yemen. The erosion is absolute. Houthis can be subdued for the time being but their resistance in a rugged terrain cannot be crushed completely and carries repercussions. Saudi aggression in Yemen has engraved writings on the wall for the house of Saud in Saudi Arabia.
