Dr Syed Javed Hussain
Agents of devil tearing the country asunder are sparing no lives including old men, women, children and infants, whereas pacifists among us, now incidentally at the helms of affairs, are talking about engaging them in conversation. On legal, moral and humane level they are wrong and deserve censor to bring them back to correct line of thinking.
Great many analogies are drawn for wooing the government to talk with terrorists. Citations include the US talks with Taliban in Afghanistan, UK governments' dialogues with 'Protestant vs. Catholics' in Ireland, Scandinavian terrorism and other international or transnational terrorist organizations and challenges which were neutralized a little through dialogue and sometimes sheer force of law and muscle helped governments bring peace and stability to their nations.
However, in Pakistan, where have already tried dialogues many a time before, no analogy can be drawn to justify re-initiation of government’s dialogue with these criminals. No peace can be reached with terrorists, half-wit fanatics who have defied all norms of justice, ethics and rule of law. What dialogue can be held with people who even don’t recognize the constitution of Pakistan and want to eliminate all political institutions working under it.
Why do organized societies put criminals behind bars? Simply to protect society from such scum of earth so that lives of common law abiding citizens are safeguarded; in order that people are able to lead their lives under the protective umbrella of constitution guaranteeing their basic human rights. Governments generally don’t engage in dialogues with criminals to bring peace to their societies, instead, such criminals are hunted out, tried in courts of law and punished according to the gravity of their crimes.
The most basic and vital of the human rights is 'the right to life. God
honours this right to such an extent that in the Quran He says, ''…
whoever kills a soul … it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And
whoever saves one - it is as if he had saved mankind entirely…'' 5:32 Regarding the murder of a believer He says, ''And whoever kills a believer intentionally, his punishment is Hell; he shall abide in it, and Allah will send His wrath on him and curse him and prepare for him a painful chastisement.'' an-Nisā’ 4:93
These froth spitting Mullah should not be in doubt that in this verse five types of punishments have been ordained. The first is Hell a murderer will be thrown into; the second is that his eternal abode will be Hell; the third is the Divine wrath sent on him; the fourth is the curse of God on him and the fifth is the punishment that is agonizing, hurting and excruciating.
The Holy Prophet PBUH on the occasion of the farewell pilgrimage
(Hajjatul Wida’ declared): “O People! It is not permitted to kill the
Muslims. Similarly to appropriate their property is not allowed. So do not be unjust upon yourselves and do not revert to disbelief after my death.”
Suicide is not permitted in Islam. God says, “...and do not kill yourself (or one another); surely Allah is Merciful to you. And whoever does this aggressively and unjustly, We will soon cast him into Fire; and this is easy for Allah.” an-Nisa’ 4:29-30
A US philosopher John Rawls says, 'Each person possesses an inviolability founded on justice that even the welfare of society as a whole cannot override.''
Terrorists in Pakistan have political agenda, however, means they use are apolitical, violent, illegal and unconstitutional. Even they don't have any ethical, cultural or moral justification of what they do. During the last general elections, PMLN and PTI were spared of their bloody ire and were given almost free ride to run election campaign, whereas, PPP, MQM, ANP etc, all semi-secular parties opposing Taliban, were brutally targeted and forced to restrict their election campaign immensely. The results were foregone conclusion. However, terrorists should not expect any reciprocal gestures from governments of the day; Pakistan interests are too dear and costly.
Nawaz government, however, so far has only displayed seriousness which is not backed by any tangible moves to tackle the problem. In the last 75 days under new dispensation 65 terrorist attacks took place in the first 65 days in which about 315 innocent precious lives were lost. The PPP, ANP and even MQM offered sacrifices in maintaining the law and order during their tenure. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa ANP’s sacrifices were most daring ones. The provincial government condemned every act of terrorism and its
ministers visited the scene of the crime and offered help and condolences to the victims. Senior Minister of KP Bashir Ahmed Bilour lost his life and its Information Minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain offered the sacrifice of his own son. Despite this the ANP did not dither away from its responsibility of siding with the victims and continued its fight against the agents of gloom and terror.
Conversely, what PTI has done since taking over the government. It has not yet condemned any act of terrorism and its ministers have not shown any sympathy towards innocent victims of terrorism. Mr. Imran Khan may have some issues with the war-on-terror and the unwarranted US drone strikes, but does he have issues with the innocent victims of terror who have nothing to do either with the US war-on-terror or its drone strikes?
Government is hugely confused over the question of terror. The confusion is on legal, religious and psychological level. The leaders should know that under no circumstances they can have sympathies towards murderers and that their obligation under Sharia, no less under the constitution of Pakistan, is to catch murderers, strengthen the law and bring justice to the victims of terror. No more and no less. Justice can ameliorate the situation miraculously and bring back confidence to the nation. Saying Attributed to Harry S. Truman reads, '' Do your duty, and history will do you justice.''
