Ravaged by natures fury in floods that have killed more than 2,000 people in the country, Pakistan is up against terrorists and mischief mongers with shoot-at-sight-orders to law enforcement agencies in Karachi, the provincial capital of province Sindh that accounts for 80 percent of countrys revenue. Pakistans fight against terrorism seems to have intensified.
Law Enforcement Agencies Ordered to Shoot Terrorists at Sight
According to media reports Interior Minister of Pakistan Mr. Abdul Rehman Malik issued orders to law enforcement agencies on August 5, 2010 to shoot terrorists at sight in order to control the growing wave of targeted killings and violence in Karachi. A wave of terrorism is sweeping across the city and has claimed 92 innocent lives in the last four days since August 2, 2010 when Mutahidda Qaumi Movement (MQM) MPA Raza Haider was assassinated in an act of target killing.
Mr. Malik announced this while visiting the MQM headquarters, Nine Zero, in Karachi. Nine Zero is the residence of self-exiled leader of MQM Mr. Altaf Hussain, most popularly referred to as Altaf Bhai by MQM leaders and workers altogether. He is currently based in London but his residence is considered as Ground Zero or Epicentre of MQM politics in the country. This is the place for all major high powered MQM meetings and crucial decisions.
Altaf Hussain and Other Leaders Condemn the Murder
Mr. Babar Ghauri, Haider Abbas Rizvi and all other MQM leaders including its leader Altaf Hussain as well as all politicians across the board have expressed profound grief on the tragic incident. On the day of the tragedy Babar Ghauri said, It would be difficult to put a cap on the chapter opened.
Syed Raza Haider whose murder has triggered the violence that is worst of its kind in Karachis history was an MQM leader and member Sindh Assembly from PS-94 Karachi 6. He was also a very popular social worker. According to media reports unknown armed motorcyclists fired shots at Raza Haider as well as his guard when he was preparing to attend a funeral prayer at a mosque in Nazimabad Block No.2.
MQM Blames ANP to Compound PPPs Troubles
Immediately after the murder of Raza Haider, MQM blamed its rival political party vying for political mileage in the city, Awami National Party (ANP). Both are Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) coalition partners at the centre and hold some very crucial portfolios.
Whereas the PPP can form a government in Sindh it cannot rule the province smoothly without the support of the MQM, which has huge following in urban areas of Sindh. On the other hand the ANP has a government in the most volatile province of Pakistan which is on the forefront of Pakistans fight against terrorism, Khaiber Pukhtoonkhawa.
Further, with the Pakistan Muslim League (N) being on the opposition benches, the PPP government at centre cannot survive without the support of all of its coalition partners.
Interior Minister Blames Terrorist Outfits
On August 3, 2010 briefing the Senate on the situation in Karachi, Interior Minister Rehman Malik tried to ease the situation and put the blame on banned Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LJ) along with other terrorist outfits hiding in the thick of Karachi population. Even though the Awami National Party (ANP) was vindicated it strongly protested in the Senate against the killing of Pakhtuns in the wake of the assassination. It demanded that the army be deployed in Karachi. The request has been granted.
According to Geo television, widely watched Urdu news channel in Pakistan, report on August 6, 2010 Syed Yousif Raza Gallani, Prime Minister of Pakistan arrived in Karachi to have on ground assessment of the situation. Issuing strict warnings to mischief mongers he declared that anti-Pakistan forces to destabilise the country were never as active in the past as now.
President Zardari is on a semi official visit to the UK and is being hugely criticised in Pakistan media for choosing an inopportune occasion to do so when the country is ravaged by severe floods unprecedented in its history: especially, when the UK prime minister has also made the diplomatic atmosphere mucky with the criticism of Pakistan for not doing enough to tackle the menace of terrorism.
