The mystery murder that shook the power echelons in Pakistan in which a Supreme Court of Pakistan’s senior judge’s parents were murdered on 11th January 2011 was solved in Lahore today 18th January, 20011 with shocking revelations.
Malik Abdual Hameede, 80 and Zarina 70, were living on the ground floor of their house near Cavalry Ground, a high security area in Lahore, when they were killed by unknown intruders. They had rented the upper storey to two women.
Many theories were put forward at the time of the tragic incident. Even government was blamed for being lax in the security of judges and their families to pressure judiciary into submission.
However, the current wave of terrorism coupled with political disorientation in the wake of the murder of Salman Taseer, governor of Punjab, seven days ago on 4th January 2011, had people reading the event differently. Deep clouds of distrust were cast over the PPP government’s capacity to rule the country.
The police of the biggest province of Pakistan, Punjab, was challenged with this murder as the very foundations of the government were shaken.
According to the Dawn, the largest English newspaper of Pakistan, preliminary investigations had suggested that the unfortunate couple were suffocated to death in their bedroom. Two policemen deputed outside the house had been taken into custody. The incident took place despite the fact that the house was guarded round the clock. A housemaid also went missing after the incident.
Resolution of the mystery murder is equally tragic. The youngest son of the family is found to be the murderer. According to Geo, the most popular TV channel in Pakistan, brother of Justice Javed Iqbal, senior most judge of Supreme Court of Pakistan, has been arrested. Naveed Iqbal has allegedly confessed the crime. He will be prosecuted before local magistrate today on 19th January, 2011.
Murder details are gruesome and hair raising. Cruelty and depravity of human nature gone astray is fully displayed. The disgruntled son is a sub-inspector in Intelligence Bureau (IB), Pakistan’s premier intelligence agency after ISI, and had always demanded money from his parents. He was helped many times in the past, but was never satisfied whatever he got from his parents.
On the day of the murder he came to his parents with two accomplices, Abbass and Amin. He used pillows with the help of his two friends to suffocate his parents. Because of excessive pressure many ribs of his mother were broken.
Even though the murder mystery has been solved, it has raised many questions about Pakistan’s security agencies. Seven days ago a guard, who was supposed to protect governor Salman Taseer, killed him in cold blood, whereas close at heal a son and sub-inspector in an intelligence agency stooped down so low in depravity as to murder his own parents in cold blood. People are asking whether Pakistan’s security agencies are still good enough to protect the country without thorough psychological analysis of its personnel. Their losing battle against terrorism tells a different story.
