Machiavellian campaign of deception, intrigue and sham being spearheaded by the US against Iran’s nuclear programme does not end at West’s duplicity, double standard and downright bias and partiality. The argument runs deeper than the superficial reading of the problem.
The divide on the issue is profound, intense and absolute and if all parties remain stuck to their guns, a major disaster of gigantic magnitude is in the offing. What Mohamed ElBaradei told the UN Security Council recently was a foregone conclusion. It was no secret that Iran had refused to comply with the illegal demand of UNSC to stop enrichment of Uranium even for peaceful purposes.
On legal grounds, Iran’s stand is undefeatable and no authority, even the UN can forfeit it. Regarding the confidence-building measures Iran should satisfy the West it appears that no amount of measures taken by Iran can satisfy the US and the West’s propensities.
Further, the inimical and selective war against terror and Islamic
fundamentalism has already marred the international atmosphere to such an extent that nothing less than total freeze on Iran’s nuclear programme and subsequent dismantling of the whole nuclear edifice, will make the West come down from its high horse on Iran. Finally, the elimination of the rule of clergy in Iran will completely satisfy the West and close the chapter of unclear controversy over Iran.
The cavalier attitude with which the US is dealing with Iran coupled with threats to attack Iran’s nuclear installations has already intensified the effect of the atmosphere of distrust and misgivings at the IAEA. Reports suggesting US overt contingency plans to attack Iran has on the contrary whipped the morale of the nation and now more than ever every Iranian is willing to lay his life for the sake of national pride, integrity, sovereignty and right of peaceful exploitation of nuclear technology.
On 26th April the leader of Iranian forces and Murshid of nation, Ayatullah Khamenei had to come in the open and speak on Iran’s nuclear programme candidly to remove doubts and uncertainty over its nuclear programme to satisfy the nation. He told the world in unequivocal terms that any attack on Iran would be an act of war and in retaliation, Iran would target the US interests all over the world.
“The Americans should know that if they launch an assault against Islamic Iran, their interests in every possible part of the world will be harmed,” Ayatollah Khomeini was quoted as saying by state television. “The Iranian nation will give a double response to any strike,” he warned the US in one of his toughest threats ever. If the US still indulges in any such recklessness, under fanatical Bush, then it is preordained that there will be heavy casualties.
The leaders of the West at times go overboard and simply ignore the fact that while talking about Iran they are dealing with a highly democratic nation of over 65 million people.
The problem with the nuclear argument is that ‘militarization of Iran’s unclear programme is not the issue at hand.’ The real issue is the refusal of know-how of atomic power to Iran. On April 19 during his visit to Russia the US Under Secretary of State called for an end to Russia’s cooperation with Iran in building the latter’s first civilian nuclear power station.
He said, “We also think it is important for countries to stop cooperation with Iran on nuclear issues, even on civilian nuclear issues like the Bushehr facility.”
To counter Iran’s attempts at enrichment know-how the United States launched the Global Nuclear Energy Partnership (GNEP) in Feb 2006. According to this project the US and certain other countries of nuclear club will exercise worldwide control over enrichment of uranium and will supply enriched uranium to nations in need of it.
According to this plan the club “… will work with … international partners to develop a fuel services programme to supply developing nations with reliable access to nuclear fuel in exchange for a commitment to forego the development of enrichment and recycling technology,”. Intellectually impoverished and educationally decrepit Third World is not trusted with knowledge and is kept away from the fountain of life and enlightenment.
The West that so far has been boasting about Renaissance, has come down hard on Iran like an Inquisition. Now the East is being spearheaded by Iran is fighting for its own Renaissance. The East dominantly Muslim and poor, is breaking free from the intellectual, economic, educational and cultural shackles of mainly Christian West.
Iran’s advancement into the study of atom and its peaceful exploitation is a step in the right direction which finally will bring deliverance to Muslim psyche and infuse confidence in their youths. While discussing Iran’s nuclear programme, we simply ignore the fact that enrichment brings home tremendous educational and technological dividends. Research and development, an inalienable right of any nation, cannot be taken away from Iran on any pretext.
It is obvious that Iran cannot and will not abandon its nuclear programme. On the other hand, the US and West, under the influence of judo-Christian fanatic lobbies, will not allow Iran to grow independent, albeit educationally, in Nuclear technology. On April 19 in Moscow US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Nicholas Burns talking to reporters after two days of talks with other world powers on how to resolve the Iran’s nuclear impasse said that the US will do its best to deny Iran nuclear capability.
The threats of all options against Iran coming from US, are not helping at all to resolve the issue peacefully. In response to such threats, Iran’s leaders said what any brave and proud nation’s leaders would say in such an eventuality.
On 18th April President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad while addressing a military garrison warned that Iran would “cut off the hand of any aggressor.” If the US continues with it hawkish policies on Iran’s nuclear issues then itmight force Iran to opt out of the NPT altogether. On April 27 DrAhmadinejad told the IRNA news agency, “If international institutions respect our legitimate rights, we will respect their decisions. However, we will not regard these decisions as valid if they are intended to deny us our rights,”
